Translations within the project are carried out in the Translation View of the project. The translation view always displays the currently valid translation.
To activate the Translation View (displayed below) just select the first resource (e.g. string table) in your Project tree or use the functionality Select First Resource in the Edit menu.
The Translation view with its translation table contains 6 columns. Each column can be sorted ascending or descending (in the registered version of Visual Localize) by clicking with your mouse into the table header (ID, Translation, Limit,...) of the desired column.
The currently active phrase in the table will be marked with yellow background color and a arrow symbol in front of the line.
Table columns:
ID:
Unique identifier of the source phrase to identify each phrase exactly (e.g. in a new software release or version)
Translation:
This column contains the source phrase in the upper row with the identifier and its corresponding translation directly below the source phrase.
NOTE: If no translation was inserted yet, the source and target phrases are identical.
Limit:
This column displays the maximum amount of single byte characters which are available for translation. If this limitation threshold will be reached from the translator, Visual Localize stops writing in the target cell.
NOTE: In case that the localization project (*.prj) shall be translated into a multi-byte language (e.g. Chinese), Visual Localize automatically limits the translator with the maximum amount of characters in the target language.
For example: A limit of 10 characters in German language will be a limit of 5 characters in Chinese language, because Chinese is normally encoded in double byte characters.
R.o. (abbreviation for: "Read-only"):
If this status is set the source phrase is marked as read-only and is therefore not allowed to be modified or translated. The translator will not be able to change the current value of the target phrase.
Ex. (abbreviation for: "Exception"):
If this status flag is set, the source phrase uses an exception instead of a default translated phrase. For example: An exception will be defined to translate a source phrase in a special context. In this context the exception is used unique and will not be reused for the translation of identical source phrases at other locations.
To decide if an exception should be defined or not you can click on the browse button to open a Where used dialog. This dialog lists all locations in the project which uses the same translation.
|
In order to get the highest grade of reuse we recommend using a minimum of exceptions. |
Tr. (abbreviation for: "Translated"):
This status flag defines the target cell with its phrase to be completely translated.
In case that the target cell was modified and the user has pressed the <RETURN> key on the keyboard, Visual Localize will jump to the next target cell and defines the previous phrase as translated.
NOTE: All phrases which do not have to be modified (e.g. an OK button) for translation have to be set as translated manually. Therefor please check on the Tr. checkbox with the mouse.
There are two basic ways of how to carry out translations:
Translate all available phrases without seeing their context:
If you want to translate all strings/phrases within a project without seeing their context, mark the project name (*.prj) at top level of the tree (click with your mouse) in your Project window. All phrases from the complete project (also all unused phrases) will be displayed to the user.
NOTE: The Resource window will not be activated choosing the project on top level for translation!
View the corresponding context (resource) of a phrase while translating:
If you want to translate the strings/phrases of a single resource while seeing their context, mark the corresponding resource on the resource level (at the project tree please click with your mouse on the desired dialog, string table or menu).
Only the strings/phrases (text lines) that belong to the selected resource are displayed in the translation view, the source line being the leading one and the and the target line the trailing one. The resource view will be activated when your selected resource is a dialog or menu.
|
For a better translation quality we urgently recommend displaying the complete translation context by selecting each resource (e.g. dialog, menu, string table...) as described in method 2. (See above) |
There are two different types to translate a phrase:
Default Translation:
This is the standard translation of a source phrase. Default translations are indicated by an empty (not set) exception checkbox and will be automatically reused for all identical source phrases.
NOTE: Each source phrase can contain only ONE default translation. The changing a default translation results automatically in a corresponding translation of all same source phrases that occur within the whole project. However, resources for which exceptions have been defined, are not affected by changes to the default translation.
Exception Translation:
Exceptions are translations that apply only to certain specific resources (depending on their context). Exceptions are indicated by a check mark in the checkbox Ex..
